This might shock you but the point of this game is for Mario to protect Princess Peach as she is once again in need of saving. You would think Peach would have her own National Guard protecting her by now but no. Anyways, shoot down the incoming koopas out of the sky with your cannon or else they will pulverize poor Princess Peach into a pulp.
