Improving Web Search Positions

Introduction

Almost every search engine is unique; i.e., it is coded differently, has a different set-of-rules for using your search criteria, spiders web sites differently, uses different rules for placing pages on top of a search, etc. So how do you get your web site to the top? There are several schemes, whether employing tricks of the trade, sure diligence, or massive search engine submissions, but only the right combination will work with most search engines. You could cater your site to always hit high, but be limited to just one or two search engines because the others may penalize your over emphasis.

    Some tricks of the trade

  • You need to clearly identify your site's content with several "key" words that your target audience will be using to find you or your competitors.
  • Write a clear concise and very brief description of your site.
  • Ensure your page uses "meta" tags specifically using the content "keywords" and "description".
  • In writing your index page, make sure at least two of your key words is employed several times in different formats within the HTML, i.e., in <H> tags, hyper links, title, main body text, comments, etc.
  • Limit the number of times keywords are used depending on the search engine targeted.
  • Submit your index page to several search engines.
  • Submit other key pages to the same search engines (not needed for some engines and you may be penalized).
  • Instruct search engines to re-visit your site on a fixed schedule.
  • Put the title of your page as the first item in the <head> tag.
  • Put the major design emphasis on the index page, make it easy to load, read, understand your content and navigate from including hyper links.
